Adding more fuel to the political firestorm involving Republican Presidential candidates Michelle Bachmann and Rick Perry, a federal government advisory committee has recommended significant extension of the HPV (the human papillomavirus) vaccine.
Boys and young men should be vaccinated against HPV to protect against anal and throat cancers that can result from sexual activity, according to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The committee voted 13-0 in favor of the recommendation (with one abstention).
The recommendation is likely to significantly increase the utilization of the vaccine as insurers are expected to reimburse the cost to physicians.
